FIRST SECTION
Bible-based warnings and teachings about how sons and daughters are to treat their parents — especially about disrespect, neglect, or abuse.
1. God’s Command and Blessing: Honor Your Parents
Exodus 20:12 (KJV)
“Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.”
Ephesians 6:1–3 (KJV)
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.”
Meaning:
Disrespect toward parents shortens peace and blessing; honor brings longevity and favor. This applies to both young and adult children.
2. God Strongly Condemns Disrespect or Mockery
Proverbs 30:17 (KJV)
“The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.”
Meaning:
This Hebrew proverb uses vivid imagery — mocking or scorning parents leads to ruin. God sees dishonor as rebellion against His authority structure.
3. Severe Old Testament Warning
Deuteronomy 27:16 (KJV)
“Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen.”
Meaning:
To “set light” by parents means to treat them lightly — with contempt or neglect. Such behavior brought a curse under the Law.
It reflects how seriously God views parental respect.
4. Abuse and Neglect Bring Judgment
Proverbs 19:26 (KJV)
“He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.”
1 Timothy 5:8 (KJV)
“But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.”
Meaning:
Abandoning or abusing one’s parents in old age is both a moral and spiritual failure. Neglect is equated to denying the faith.
5. God Notices How We Treat Our Parents
Proverbs 23:22 (KJV)
“Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.”
Meaning:
Even when parents are aged, sick, or no longer influential, they are still to be cherished and respected.
6. Jesus Reinforced This Command
Mark 7:10–13 (KJV)
“For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death:
But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban… ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother.”
Meaning:
Jesus rebuked religious people who used excuses to avoid caring for their parents. He called it hypocrisy and a violation of God’s Word.
7. Abuse, Violence, or Reviling
Exodus 21:15, 17 (KJV)
“And he that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death.
And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.”
Meaning:
Physical or verbal abuse against parents was seen as one of the most serious sins — showing utter rebellion and hardness of heart.
8. Reminder for Adult Children Proverbs 28:24 (KJV)
“Whoso robbeth his father or his mother, and saith, It is no transgression; the same is the companion of a destroyer.”
Meaning:
Taking advantage of parents — financially, emotionally, or otherwise — aligns one with destructive behavior.
9. Christ’s Example of Honor
Even while suffering on the cross, Jesus provided for His mother:
John 19:26–27 (KJV)
“When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! … Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.”
Meaning:
Christ modeled care and responsibility, even in His final moments.
