“To Forget What Lies Behind” — The Mature Balance

“To forget what lies behind” is often used as a quick, convenient quip — a deflection or even a denial of responsibility to make the effort to work things out in a peaceful and mutually respectful relationship.

Too often, it becomes a Christian habit used to “move on” or “get what one wants,” at the expense of the other person. It’s a hurried, fast fix, saying, “Let me loose to perform life.”

It’s often Extra-Special People, those who regard themselves as “Big Shots” or “Overseers of All,” who feel entitled to quote that verse while never applying it inwardly.

Now, the point I want to make:
Yes, it is biblical to forgive and to forget what lies behind.
And yes, Jesus taught us:

“Turn the other cheek.”
“Walk the extra mile.”
“Forgive, for they know not what they do.”

I am completely for that.

But here’s the fuller truth — Jesus grew up among real people.
He knew their hearts, their minds, and their lives.

And He gave us a mature, adult version of love and accountability:

Hold them accountable.
(See Matthew 21:12-13; all of Matthew 23; Matthew 7:21-23.)
(See also Genesis 3 — Creator God confronting Adam, the first human, face to face.)

Bottom line:
Ephesians 3:19 reminds us to “know the love of Christ which passes knowledge,” and to be “filled with all the fullness of God.”

That means we must continually draw from His love — and from one another — when the Spirit leads.
This type of deep love surpasses mere ministry formulas, rote Bible quoting, and performance religion.

When “Forgetting” Becomes Avoidance

The simple motto in all of this seems to be:

“It’s right to forgive and forget what lies behind — unless the same exact behavior keeps returning with no mercy, only Christian manipulation, avoidance, one-sided fault-finding, and control.”

When that happens, a true follower of Christ must obey Jesus’ command to respectfully confront it — not with hate or revenge, but with truth, maturity, and love.

That is the Galatians 6:1, Matthew 18:15-16, and Revelation 2 pattern of correction — where Jesus Himself commanded His servant to confront the Jezebel spirit influencing the Church of Thyatira.

Too often today, this same dominating and escaping “Mighty Queen” spirit reappears — sly, religious, and controlling (see 1 Samuel 15:23).
It may rule from pulpits, meetings, or boardrooms, masking itself as holiness, while practicing spiritual intimidation.

But this is not who I am — far from that.

Yet I recognize it in many modern ministries: leaders assuming power, seeking to oversee all (what I call Levitical Patriarchism).
These rude, haughty, self-appointed “spiritual giants” become accusers of those with a higher calling — people like me — because they see themselves over others, though God has not placed them there.

I do not stand over them, nor am I under them.
Rather, I walk beside them — but I am no longer willing to remain in their oppressive systems of control.

“If we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another…” — 1 John 1:7

Yet many refuse that light.
They prefer gossip to relationship, control to collaboration.
This is the slave–master cult mentality that Jesus came to destroy.

I must sometimes interact with such leaders in business or ministry — but I will never again allow that toxic spirit into my private inner circle.
It has caused great repeated damage, emotional wear and tear, and spiritual exhaustion — right when I needed peace the most.

So I say — No more.

I will make every effort to forgive, to release, and to “forget what lies behind.”
That is right and biblical.

But if these same patterns appear again, I will rise up and maturely, openly, and respectfully confront — as Christ Himself commands.

Say Amen.
